Dollar records further loss, sells for N390 at parallel market

The value of the Dollar continued to diminish against the Naira as the Nigerian currency was traded at N390 on Thursday in Abuja. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Naira had also appreciated against the Euro, exchanging at N400 while remaining stable against the Pound Sterling at N465. The last time the naira traded at between N390 and N400 to the dollar at the parallel market was in August 2016.

Nigeria launches 48-hour online visa application system

Nigeria has launched an online system aimed at enabling business executives to apply for a visa online and collect it on arrival 48 hours later, its immigration service said on Thursday.                                         The move to ease visa rules in the West African country follows complaints from foreign executives that obstructive embassy officials made it difficult to enter the country. Under the new system, travellers must register with the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) and provide details including travel document information, after which a letter of approval may be issued and the visa collected on arrival.

Naira gains N20 against dollar

The naira appreciated significantly against the dollar on Wednesday to trade at N410 to the dollar, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports. The local currency gained 20 naira to exchange at N410 to the dollar from N430 posted on Tuesday. It also firmed against the pound sterling and the Euro as it was traded at N510 to the pound and 435 to the Euro from N530 and N450, respectively.

Man arraigned for allegedly paying sex worker with fake naira

A 30-year-old man, Frank Igwe, who allegedly used some fake naira to pay a sex worker for her services, was on Wednesday charged before a Yaba Chief Magistrate Court in Lagos. The accused, whose address was not given, is facing a charge of unlawful possession of fake currency. The prosecutor, Ibijoke Akinpelu, told the court that the accused committed the offence on March 17 at about 2:00 a.m. at Standard Hotel, No. 11, Olokodana St., Bariga, Lagos.

Authorities arrested three drug dealers accused of smuggling heroin in pieces of household furniture, officials said Tuesday. Cops grabbed Jorge Pizarro, 41, Nelson DeJesus, 40, and Miguel Angeles, 27, saying they tried to make an end-run around police by secreting more than 6 pounds of heroin in high-quality wooden end tables they transported from Texas and kept in a Bronx storage unit, officials said. The drugs were stashed in compartments in the tables, officials said.

Navy arrests eight suspects, destroyed 30 illegal refineries

The Nigerian Navy operating in the Niger Delta region has arrested eight suspected illegal oil marketers while destroying at least 30 illegal refineries in Delta state. In a series of intensified anti-crude oil theft operations, Nigerian Navy Ship NNS DELTA discovered and destroyed a total of 10 illegal refineries at a camp around Jones Creek, Warri South West LGA of Delta State. The facilities destroyed during the raid include 200 metal tanks, 35 dug pits loaded with about 3,000 metric tons (MT) of product suspected to be stolen crude oil and 1,500MT of illegally refined AGO. In a statement signed by the Acting Director of Information, Navy Captain Suleman Dahun in Abuja, a patrol team deployed by the Base arrested a suspect and destroyed a network of 6 illegal refineries around Ugbodede and Asugbo Creeks in Warri South LGA.

Lagos task force arrest two ‘one-chance’ operators

Operatives of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences Unit (Task Force) nabbed two ‘one-chance’ operators and impounded their commercial Volkswagen bus along Mile 2, Lagos. The two culprits: Chuckwudi Ezeudo of No. 1, Ezeudo Lane, off Babarin street, Ajegunle and Mr. Wilfred Ukpo of No. 1, Ajose Street, Ajegunle, Olodi-Apapa, Lagos who confessed that they have been using commercial bus to rob people around Lagos were arrested around 6pm on Tuesday with their operational vehicle, a Volkswagen commercial bus with registration number EPE 165 XS.

Niger Delta: Buhari orders contractors to resume work or face prosecution

The Federal Government has issued a new set of directives in its bid to accelerate the implementation of the President Muhammadu Buhari administration’s new vision for the development of the Niger Delta. To this end, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, on behalf of this principal, has given all contractors including those handling Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, projects in the region a 30-day ultimatum from today to return to site or face prosecution.

Cameroon forcefully deported 2,600 Nigerians in 10 weeks – UN

United Nations Refugee Agency on Tuesday said over 2,600 refugees have been forcefully returned back to Nigeria in 2017. The UNHCR said these forceful returns have continued unabated after the governments of Nigeria and Cameroon signed a tripartite agreement with UNHCR. A statement from the UNHCR spokesperson, Babar Baloch, said Cameroonian troops returned refugees against their will, without allowing them time to collect their belongings.

Soldiers foil bank robbery in Owo

Banking activities in Owo local government area of Ondo State was on Tuesday disrupted around 10.30 a.m following an attempt by suspected armed robbers to attack a commercial bank in the town. Also, the four operating banks in the four local governments of Akoko kingdom stopped operation immediately they were alerted about the robbers’ presence in Owo. Nigerian government blacklists 25 oil marketers over fraud

Petroleum Equalization Fund (Management) Board says it has blacklisted 25 oil marketers for defrauding the Nigerian Government. The fund, however, has not revealed names of the affected marketers. PEF listed theirs offences as changing of truck heads without getting clearance from the agency, tampering with tags affixed on trucks as well as presentation of trucks with water (instead of petrol) at receiving depots by these marketers.
